Ausgangspunkt des Workshops mit dem Regisseur Alain Kassanda ist sein preisgekrönter Dokumentarfilm Coconut Head Generation, in dem Studierende der Universität Ibadan ihren Filmclub in eine politische Agora verwandeln, die Meinungsfreiheit verteidigen und kritisches Denken fördern. Der Workshop bietet den Teilnehmenden die Möglichkeit, direkt mit Kassanda ins Gespräch zu kommen und seine künstlerische wie politische Herangehensweise kennenzulernen. Gemeinsam wird darüber nachgedacht, wie junge Menschen ihre Stimme erheben und das Kino als Plattform für sozialen Wandel, als Raum des Dialogs, des Widerstands und der Selbstermächtigung nutzen können. Kassanda präsentiert und kommentiert Ausschnitte aus seinem Film Colette et Justin, außerdem seinen Kurzfilm Trouble Sleep (40 Minuten) sowie seine Arbeit zum Columbia Encampment, die im Rahmen des Projekts Some-Strings entstanden ist und in enger Verbindung zu Coconut Head Generation steht.
The starting point of the workshop with director Alain Kassanda is his award-winning documentary Coconut Head Generation, in which students at the University of Ibadan transform their film club into a political agora, defending freedom of expression and fostering critical thinking.
The workshop offers participants the opportunity to engage directly with Kassanda and learn about his artistic as well as political approach. Together, they will reflect on how young people can raise their voices and use cinema as a platform for social change, as a space for dialogue, resistance, and self-empowerment.
Kassanda will present and comment on excerpts from his film Colette et Justin, his short film Trouble Sleep (40 minutes), and his work on the Columbia Encampment, which was created as part of the Some-Strings project and is closely connected to Coconut Head Generation.

Alain Kassanda wurde in Kinshasa geboren und zog im Alter von elf Jahren nach Frankreich. Nach seinem Studium in Kommunikation programmierte er fünf Jahre lang das Kino Les 39 marches in Sevran bei Paris und gründete das Festival À hauteur d’enfant, das aus kindlicher Perspektive erzählt. Sein erster Langfilm Colette & Justin, in dem seine Familiengeschichte mit Kolonialgeschichte verbunden wird, lief 2022 im Wettbewerb des IDFA. Mit Trouble Sleep, aufgenommen in Ibadan (Nigeria), erzählt er das urbane Leben aus der Perspektive eines Taxifahrers. Der Film gewann 2020 die Goldene Taube beim DOK Leipzig und wurde beim Visions du Réel gewürdigt. Coconut Head Generation ist sein dritter Film. Neben seiner Filmarbeit ist er als Spoken-Word-Künstler unter dem Namen Apkass aktiv und Mitbegründer des Kollektivs Chant d’encre.
Alain Kassanda was born in Kinshasa and moved to France at the age of eleven. After studying communication, he spent five years programming the cinema Les 39 marches in Sevran, near Paris, and founded the children’s film festival À hauteur d’enfant. His first feature-length documentary Colette & Justin intertwined his own family history with that of colonialism and screened at IDFA in 2022. His film Trouble Sleep, shot in Ibadan, Nigeria, offers a vibrant portrait of urban life through the eyes of a taxi driver. It won the Golden Dove at DOK Leipzig and received recognition at Visions du Réel. Coconut Head Generation is his third film. Kassanda is also a spoken word artist under the name Apkass and co-founder of the collective Chant d’encre.
