„Aus guten kenianischen Mädchen werden gute kenianische Ehefrauen“ – Kena lernt früh, was in ihrem Heimatland von Mädchen und Frauen erwartet wird: brav zu sein und sich dem Willen der Männer zu unterwerfen. So wird ihre alleinerziehende Mutter auch dafür verantwortlich gemacht, dass ihr Mann sie wegen einer jüngeren Frau verlassen hat. Doch die selbstbewusste Kena lässt sich nicht vorschreiben, wie sie zu leben hat. So freundet sie sich auch mit der hübschen Ziki an, obwohl ihre Väter politische Rivalen sind. Zunächst scheren sich die Mädchen wenig um den Klatsch und Tratsch in der Nachbarschaft. Doch als sich Kena und Ziki ineinander verlieben, müssen sie zwischen der vermeintlichen Sicherheit ihre Liebe zu verstecken und der Chance auf ihr gemeinsames Glück wählen.

Her single mother is blamed for her husband leaving her for a younger woman, yet the self-confident Kena does not let anyone tell her how to live. Even though their fathers are political rivals, she befriends Ziki. At first, Kena and Ziki don’t care much about the gossip in the neighborhood but when the friends fall in love, they have to choose between the supposed safety of hiding it or the chance for happiness together.

Die in Nairobi geborene Wanuri gehört zur neuen Generation der afrikanischen Geschichtenerzähler. Ihre Geschichten und Filme haben internationale Anerkennung gefunden. Sie ist Mitbegründerin von AFROBUBBLEGUM, einem Medienunternehmen, das lustige, wilde und frivole afrikanische Kunst unterstützt, schafft und in Auftrag gibt. 2008 stellte Wanuri ihren ersten Spielfilm From A Whisper fertig, der auf den realen Ereignissen rund um die Zwillingsbombenanschläge auf die US-Botschaften in Nairobi und Dar es Salaam im Jahr 1998 basiert. Der Film gewann Preise bei den Africa Movie Academy Awards, darunter für die beste Regie und den besten Film, den Golden Dhow Award beim Zanzibar International Film Festival und den Best Film bei den Kalasha, Kenya Film and TV Awards. Kurz darauf stellte sie einen Dokumentarfilm über das Leben der Friedensnobelpreisträgerin Wangari Maathai mit dem Titel Für unser Land (2009) für die M-Netäs ‚Great Africans‘ Serie fertig. Ihr kurzer Science-Fiction-Film Pumzi (2009), der teilweise von Focus Features, dem Goethe Institut und dem Changa Moto Fund in Kenia finanziert wurde, lief 2010 auf dem Sundance Filmfestival. Pumzi gewann den Preis für den besten Kurzfilm beim Cannes Independent Film Festival im Mai 2010 und erhielt Silber beim Carthage Film Festival 2010. Wanuri wurde 2017 zum TED Fellow und 2018 zum World Economic Forum Cultural Leader ernannt. Wanuri veröffentlichte ihr erstes Kinderbuch, Das hölzerne Kamel (Lanata Publishing), sie befindet sich derzeit in der Postproduktion eines abendfüllenden Dokumentarfilms „GER“ (To Be Separate) und in der Vorproduktion von „Rusties„, einem Science-Fiction-Film aus der nahen Zukunft, der in Nairobi spielt.

Born in Nairobi, Wanuri is part of the new generation of African storytellers. Her stories and films have received international acclaim. Her films screened in numerous film festivals around the world. To date, Wanuri has written and directed six films. Rafiki is her second feature film. She is the co-founder of AFROBUBBLEGUM, a media company that supports, creates and commissions fun, fierce and frivolous African art. In 2008, Wanuri completed her first feature film From A Whisper based on the real-life events surrounding the twin bombings of US Embassies in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam in 1998. The film won awards at the Africa Movie Academy Awards including Best Director and Best Picture, the Golden Dhow award at Zanzibar International Film Festival and Best Film at Kalasha, Kenya Film and TV awards. Shortly after she completed a documentary about the life of Nobel peace Prize laureate Wangari Maathai entitled For Our Land (2009) for M-Netäs ‘Great Africans’ Series. Her short Science Fiction Film Pumzi (2009), partially funded by Focus Features, Goethe Institut and Changa Moto Fund in Kenya, screened at Sundance in 2010. Pumzi won Best Short at Cannes Independent Film Festival, in May 2010 and took Silver at Carthage Film Festival in 2010. Wanuri was named a TED Fellow in 2017 and a World Economic Forum cultural leader in 2018. Wanuri published her first children’s book, The Wooden Camel (Lanata Publishing), she is currently in post-production on a feature-length documentary “GER” (To Be Separate) and in pre-production on “Rusties” a near-future science fiction film set in Nairobi.
