Das Gespräch des Panel II befasst sich mit der im Titel benannte Frage: ‘Wo ist Afrika in Afro-Futurismus?’ Geht es dabei nur um die Hautfarbe und darum, in die Technologie der Zukunft zu passen, ohne diese auch zu kritisieren? Sicherlich muss es doch um mehr gehen als bloß die Repräsentation Schwarze Haut in dem, was die Zukunft sein könnte und woher es ihre Inspiration bezieht? Es gibt immer noch eine Hierarchie der Macht in den Beziehungen, die solche Begriffe definieren, und die historischen Aspekte, die sie beinhalten. Wie könnte zum Beispiel der Begriff Afro-Futurismus mit vorkolonialen Zivilisationen, Kunst und Kultur in Verbindung stehen? Könnte es sinnvoll sein, darüber nachzudenken, was jenseits der Hautfarbe wirklich auf dem Spiel steht und wie neutral Technologie sein kann oder nicht?

In diesem Programm gibt es eine Reihe von Filmen, die sich mit dem befassen, was mensch als Afro-Futurismus bezeichnen könnte, oder stellen es in ihren Darstellungen der Zukunft und unserer Beziehung zu ihr in Frage…

The discussion of Panel II will address the title question: ‘Where is Africa in ‘Afro-Futurism?’ Is it just to do with skin colour and to do with fitting into the technology of the future with no critique of the latter? Surely the idea has to be more than about having black skin represented in what the future might be and where it takes its inspiration from?? There is still a hierarchy of power in the relationships that define such terms and the historical aspects to them. For example, how might the term Afro-futurism link to pre-colonial civilizations, arts and culture? Might it be useful to consider what is really at stake beyond skin colour and how neutral technology may or may not be?
